Finding the right shoe size is pertinent to one’s foot health. Shoes that are too tight can irritate the feet and create blisters or calluses; shoes that are too loose can also cause tripping. When trying on shoes ensure that you select a pair that has solid foot support, sufficient toe room, and either laces or velcro if you intend to exercise in it.

Getting the right shoe size is an important part of proper foot health. If you have any concerns about your feet contact one of our podiatrists of the Foot and Ankle Associates of North Carolina, PLLC. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Getting the Right Shoe Size

There are many people that wear shoes that are ill-fitting, which affects their feet and posture. Selecting the right shoes is not a difficult process so long as you keep several things in mind when it comes to selecting the right pair.

  • When visiting the shoe store, use the tools available to measure your foot
  • When measuring your foot with your shoe on, add 1-2 inches to the size
  • Be sure there is ‘wiggle room’. There should be about an inch between your toes and the tip of your shoes
  • Do not always assume you are the same size, as manufacturers run differently
  • Purchase shoes later in the day as your feet swell as the day progresses
  • If a shoe is not comfortable, it is not suitable. Most shoes can’t be ‘broken in’, and comfort should be the ultimate goal when it comes to choosing the right pair of shoes

As our feet hold our body weight and keep us moving, it is important to treat your feet right by choosing the right pair of shoes that can provide them comfort and mobility with minimal pain.

Our doctors will explain the unique health advantages this activity has and recommend some simple exercises.

Benefits of Swimming and Foot care

Our feet receive the most stress on a daily basis. Walking, running, and long standing contribute to pain and stress on the feet. Swimming helps promote circulation and keep the body feeling great and healthy.

Benefits of swimming:

Improve blood circulation

  • Swimming is a good, safe way to get in extra physical activity and improve circulation, without causing further trauma to the feet

Relieve aches or pains

  • It takes all the pressure off of them, allowing the feet to relax and recover, and     improves blood flow to them.

Circulation overall for diabetics

  • Swimming contributes to blood flow, and increase oxygen levels within the body.

Reduce foot inflammation

  • Swimming in warm water can increase blood flow and make it easier to move       and stretch the afflicted foot. The feet are also exposed in water, giving them        much needed air.

Swimming the helpful alternative:

Many people like the elderly and diabetics suffer from weakened muscles and joints. A water sport like swimming will support the body, thus allowing him or her to move freely. Blood flow circulation is a main trigger to tired inflamed feet.

Potential GOP candidate for President of the United States and business mogul Donald Trump is known for making out of the ordinary statements including a few statements about his medical deferment from serving in the military. Donald Trump, often criticized for not having served in the military, has stated, “My [draft number] was so incredible and it was a very high draft number. Anyway I never had to do that, but I felt that I was in the military in the true sense because I dealt with those people.” Trump also cited his lack of military experience due to heel spurs on both of his feet.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful, and sometimes might make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, call one of our podiatrists of The Foot and Ankle Associates of North Carolina, PLLC. Our doctor will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be a cause from small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching it to the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot. Bone may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs. Pain sometimes intensifies with age. Heel spurs are known to cause a substantial amount of pain. One of the main associations spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often times because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to poke and affect other boners and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain there are several methods for healing. Medicines, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

Former U.S. Mountain Running Team member Tommy Manning is no stranger to novice runners who select running shoes based more on looks than function and fit. When the athlete previously worked in a running specialty store, Manning often encounter customers who would ignore the running shoes suggested to them by the store’s running experts in favor of a pair that is more fashionable or better looking. “Feet come in all shapes and sizes, with varying widths, arch heights and amounts of pronation or supination,” he shares. “So you should by the shoe that is best for your foot in function and fit.”

Although exercise is important in maintaining overall health, wearing the proper shoe for each exercise is crucial to maintaining foot health and overall performance. According to Dr. Kade Paterson of the University of Melbourne, wearing the wrong shoe for certain exercises can cause a variety of injuries such as blisters, ingrown toenails, stress fractures, heel pain, etc. A sprinting shoe is made up of completely different components than cross fit, walking, or trail running shoes and wearing the wrong type of shoe will not protect your feet from potential injuries. Additionally, Dr. Paterson notes that many foot problems during exercise stem from wearing a shoe too big or too small. Getting your feet properly measured in addition to wearing properly cushioned socks will reduce injury.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns about your feet contact one of our podiatrists of The Foot and Ankle Associates of North Carolina, PLLC. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Exercise for Your Feet

Exercise for your feet can help you to gain strength, mobility and flexibility in your feet. They say that strengthening your feet can be just as rewarding as strengthening another part of the body. Your feet are very important and often we forget about them in our daily tasks. But it is because of our feet that are we able to get going and do what we need to. For those of us fortunate not to have any foot problems, it is an important gesture to take care of them to ensure its good health in the long run.

Some foot health exercises can include ankle pumps, tip-toeing, toe rise, lifting off the floor doing reps and sets, also flexing the toes and involving the shins may help too. It is best to speak with your doctor regarding how to do these fitness steps and how often is right for you. Everyone’s needs and bodies are different and it varies from individual to individual to determine what should be done for you to maintain strength in your feet.

Once you get into a routine of doing regular exercise, you may notice a difference in your feet and how strong they may become.
